The 1N4007 is the standard 1000V 1A silicon rectifier diode in a DO-41 axial package. Use it to turn transformer AC into DC, as a flyback diode across relay coils and motors, or for reverse-polarity protection. Sold per diode, minimum 10, with lower prices from 25.

1N4007 rectifier diodes

Great for

A four-diode bridge on a 12V or 24V transformer
Flyback diode across a relay coil or solenoid
Freewheel diode on a brushed DC motor
Reverse-polarity protection on a 12V input
Replacing a failed rectifier in an amp or charger
Combining two supplies so neither feeds the other

Wiring & getting started

  1. Find the cathode

The silver band is the cathode, the bar of the diode symbol. Current flows from the plain end to the band end.

  2. Bridge rectifier

Use four diodes. The two band ends that join give DC positive, the two plain ends that join give DC negative, and the transformer goes to the two mixed corners. Expect about 1.4 to 2V lost across the bridge.

  3. Flyback diode

Fit it across the relay coil or motor with the band to the positive supply. It does nothing in normal running and soaks up the spike at switch-off.

  4. Solder it in

The leads are up to 0.86mm thick, so use holes of 1mm or more. A diode running near 1A gets warm: give it a decent copper area, as the leads carry its heat away.

Note: The 1N4007 is a standard-recovery diode for 50Hz and 60Hz rectification. For switch-mode supplies and other high-frequency work, use a fast-recovery diode such as the FR107 or FR207, both in our 200-piece diode assortment kit.

Frequently Asked Questions

Answers to the questions buyers ask most.

What voltage is the 1N4007 rated for?
1000V peak repetitive reverse voltage and 700V RMS. That leaves plenty of margin on rectified 230V mains (about 325V peak) and on any low-voltage transformer.
How much current can it handle?
1A average with its leads at 75°C, and about 0.8A when it feeds a reservoir capacitor. It takes a 30A surge for 8.3ms at switch-on. For more than 1A, use a 3A rectifier such as the 1N5408, which is in our diode assortment kit.
Which end is the cathode?
The end with the silver band. It matches the bar on the diode symbol. In a rectifier the band end goes towards DC positive.
Can I use it as a flyback diode on a relay or motor?
Yes. Fit it across the coil or motor with the band to the positive supply. It is the usual choice for 5V, 12V and 24V relays and small brushed motors.
Is it fast enough for a switch-mode power supply?
No. The 1N4007 is a standard-recovery rectifier for 50Hz and 60Hz. For switching frequencies, use a fast-recovery diode such as the FR107 or FR207.
How many do I get?
You buy single diodes with a minimum of 10. The price per diode drops at 25, 50 and 100.

Why Buy from NZN

Useful parts, fair prices and someone local to help.

I'm Lukas, an engineering student and maker based in Te Awamutu. NZN grew out of a CNC build that dragged on for months because every missing cable, bolt or electronic part meant another overseas order. I started the shop so Kiwi makers can spend more time building and less time waiting for the next parcel.
