A 5mm diffused indicator LED made for 12V DC, with the resistor already fitted and about 20cm of red and black lead. Connect it straight to a 12V supply for panel, vehicle, alarm and model lights. For 5V projects, use the 5V version of our 3mm pre-wired diffused LED instead.

Wiring & getting started

  1. Power off

    Disconnect the 12V supply before making connections.

  2. Connect positive

    Connect the red wire to +12V, for example through the switch you want it to show.

  3. Connect negative

    Connect the black wire to negative or ground.

  4. Power and check

    Turn the supply on. If the LED does not light, turn it off and check the polarity and supply voltage.

Do I need to add a resistor?
No. A resistor is already fitted under the heat-shrink on the red lead and is chosen for 12V DC.
Which wire is positive?
Red is positive (+) and black is negative (-). Connected the other way round, the LED does not light.
Can I use it in a car?
Yes, for 12V vehicle circuits such as a switch or dash indicator. With the engine running, a car's system often sits near 14V, which pushes more current through the LED than a steady 12V supply. Use a regulated 12V feed where it needs to last.
Will it work from 5V or an Arduino pin?
No. It is made for 12V DC. For 5V projects, choose the 5V version of our 3mm pre-wired diffused LED. To switch this 12V LED from a microcontroller, use a transistor or relay module.
Are these diffused or clear LEDs?
Red, green, yellow, orange and blue have a diffused (frosted) lens with a soft, even glow. White has a water-clear lens, which gives a brighter, more pointed light.
How many do I get?
They are sold individually. Choose the colour and how many you need.
