A 6 mm diameter, 3 mm thick nickel-plated neodymium disc magnet, sold individually with a minimum of 5. It is the size most people use to trigger a Hall effect sensor or a reed switch: small enough to glue into a door, lid, wheel or 3D printed part, and strong enough to switch an A3144 or OH137 from around 5 mm away. The poles are on the two flat faces.

What's in the box

1×
6 x 3 mm neodymium disc magnet

Price is per magnet, minimum 5. They ship stacked together in a clear bag. NZ stock, dispatched within 24 hours.

Great for

Triggering an A3144 or OH137 Hall switch
Closing a reed switch for a door, gate or lid sensor
Counting wheel or shaft turns for RPM and speed readings
Position sensing with a 49E or AH3503 linear sensor
Pressing into a 3D printed part for a magnetic lid or catch
Holding covers, panels and jigs in place in a project enclosure

Wiring & getting started

  1. Find the face that switches your sensor

Unipolar Hall switches such as the A3144 and OH137 only respond to a south pole facing their printed side. If nothing happens, flip the magnet over. Mark the working face with a pen before you glue it in.

  2. Keep the gap small and face on

The field drops off quickly with distance. Point a flat face straight at the sensor and expect an A3144 to switch at roughly 5 mm. For a 41F or US1881 latch, mount two magnets with opposite faces out, one to set and one to reset.

  3. Mount it with glue, not heat

For a 3D print, design a hole about 6.2 mm across and 3.2 mm deep, then tune it for your printer. Hold the magnet in with a drop of superglue or epoxy. Do not solder, drill or grind it.

  4. Slide them apart

To take one off the stack, slide it sideways off the end rather than pulling it straight off.

Note: Keep these magnets away from children. Swallowing two or more can cause serious internal injury, so get medical help straight away if it happens. They snap together hard enough to pinch skin and can chip if they collide. Keep them away from pacemakers and other implanted medical devices.

Frequently Asked Questions

Answers to the questions buyers ask most.

Which side is north?
The faces are not marked, so check with a compass or a Hall sensor. The north-pointing end of a compass needle swings towards the magnet's south face. An A3144 or OH137 only switches when the south face points at its printed side, which makes it a quick test.
How far away will it trigger a Hall sensor or reed switch?
Face on, expect an A3144 or OH137 to switch at roughly 5 mm. A linear 49E or AH3503 shows a clear change out to about 10 mm. Reed switches vary with their sensitivity, typically somewhere around 5 to 10 mm. The distance drops quickly if the magnet is side on, so point a flat face at the sensor.
What size hole should I design for a 3D print?
Start with about 6.2 mm across and 3.2 mm deep, then adjust for your printer. A snug hole and a drop of superglue or epoxy holds it securely.
Can I solder, drill or glue it?
Glue, yes. Superglue and epoxy both work well. Do not solder, drill or grind it: heat above about 80°C permanently weakens it, and neodymium is brittle, so it cracks and chips.
Are these magnets safe around children?
No. Keep them out of reach of children. If two or more are swallowed they can pull together inside the body and cause serious injury, so get medical help straight away. They also pinch when they snap together, and should be kept away from pacemakers and other implanted medical devices.
Is there a minimum order?
Yes, 5 magnets. The price drops 10% from 10, 20% from 20 and 30% from 50 magnets.

Why Buy from NZN

Useful parts, fair prices and someone local to help.

I'm Lukas, an engineering student and maker based in Te Awamutu. NZN grew out of a CNC build that dragged on for months because every missing cable, bolt or electronic part meant another overseas order. I started the shop so Kiwi makers can spend more time building and less time waiting for the next parcel.
