Clearance - final unit. This is one new, unused switch left over from our own parts order, not a second, and our 12 month warranty still applies. We won't be restocking this model. For a plain on-off toggle we keep on the shelf, see our KN3C-101 toggle switch.

A momentary toggle switch does two jobs with one lever. Flick this NKK S9AWF one way and it stays on. Leave it in the middle and it is off. Push it the other way and it stays on only while you hold it, then springs back to off when you let go. That suits a 12V bilge pump panel, with auto one way and hold-for-manual the other, or a workshop machine with run one way and jog the other.

It is rated 20A at 30VDC, which covers most 12V and 24V panel loads, and 6A at 250VAC on New Zealand mains. The 15A printed on the case is for 125V supplies, so don't use that figure on 230V. It fits a 12.5mm panel hole, seals at the front of the panel with its O-ring, and wires up with standard 6.3mm push-on connectors.

Wiring & getting started

  1. Drill the hole

Drill a 12.5mm hole in a panel up to 4mm thick. File one edge flat, 11.1mm from the far side of the hole, to match the flat on the thread so the switch can't turn. Leave room behind the panel for the 30 x 18mm body and the tabs.

  2. Mount it

Take off the hex nut and lockwasher and leave the O-ring on the switch. Push the thread through from behind, so the O-ring sits against the back of the panel, then fit the washer and nut on the front. Tighten to 1.47 Nm, a firm nip with a small spanner. The thread is brass, so don't overdo it.

  3. Wire the tabs

With the power off, put the supply on tab 2, the middle tab. Tab 3 feeds the load that stays on, and tab 1 feeds the load that runs only while you hold the lever. The numbers are on the switch. Use insulated 6.3mm female connectors, crimped well and pushed fully home, because a loose spade is the usual cause of a switch that runs hot or cuts out.

  4. Check it works

Before closing the panel, use a meter on continuity. One way, tabs 2 and 3 connect and the lever stays put. In the middle, nothing connects. The other way, tabs 2 and 1 connect, and the lever springs back to the middle when you let go.

Note: On 230V mains, turn the power off before working on it, switch the active wire, use fully insulated connectors and mount the switch in an enclosure. If you are not confident with mains wiring, have a qualified person fit it.

Frequently Asked Questions

Answers to the questions buyers ask most.

Why is this on clearance?
It is one new, unused switch left over from our own parts order, not a second or a return, and our 12 month warranty still applies. We won't restock this model. For a plain on-off toggle we keep on the shelf, see the KN3C-101 toggle switch.
Is there any warranty on a clearance item?
Yes. It has the same 12 month warranty as our regular stock, and your rights under the Consumer Guarantees Act are not affected by the clearance price.
Will it replace my NKK S9AW?
Yes, if your wires have spade connectors. The S9AWF is the S9AW with 6.3mm quick-connect tabs, and the case on this one reads S-9AW either way. It uses the same 12.5mm hole and M12 thread. If your old switch has solder lugs, cut the wires back and crimp on 6.3mm female connectors.
Can I use it on 230V mains?
Yes, up to 6A on a resistive load such as a heater or lamp, which is about 1,380W at 230V. The 15A on the case is the rating at 125V. For a motor or anything with a big start-up surge, use this switch to drive a relay or contactor rather than the load itself.
How much can it switch on 12V or 24V?
Up to 20A on a resistive load, which is about 240W at 12V or 480W at 24V. For a motor, winch or solenoid with a big start-up surge, use the switch to drive a relay.
How do I wire the momentary side?
Tab 2 in the middle is common, so the supply goes there. Tab 3 is the side that stays on and tab 1 is the side that springs back. Only one side is live at a time, so this switch can't feed the on side and the momentary side together.
Is it waterproof?
The front of the panel is sealed to IP67 when the O-ring is fitted and the nut is tightened. The back of the switch has bare tabs, so keep that side dry inside the enclosure.
What connectors fit the tabs?
Standard 6.3mm (1/4 inch) female spade connectors. Use the fully insulated kind on mains wiring, and match the connector to your wire size.

Why Buy from NZN

Useful parts, fair prices and someone local to help.

I'm Lukas, an engineering student and maker based in Te Awamutu. NZN grew out of a CNC build that dragged on for months because every missing cable, bolt or electronic part meant another overseas order. I started the shop so Kiwi makers can spend more time building and less time waiting for the next parcel.
