The SG92R is the upgraded SG90: identical 9g body, identical 3-wire wiring, identical horns and mounting holes, but with carbon-fibre reinforced gears and 25 to 40% more torque. It is a positional servo with a 90° half sweep, running between the 90° and 180° marks on the standard servo scale, so you command an angle and it moves there and holds it. Choose it over the plain SG90 when a build keeps chewing through gears, or when you want tighter centring and a smoother sweep.

SG92R or SG90?


SG92R - the stronger one

Same body, same wiring, same horns, different internals. Carbon-fibre reinforced gears, roughly 2.2 to 2.5 kg/cm at 4.8V, a tighter deadband and better resistance to stripped gears. Best for robotics, pan and tilt rigs, RC control surfaces and anything that gets driven hard or run often.

SG90 - the budget one

Plain nylon gears and roughly 1.6 to 1.8 kg/cm at 4.8V. Perfectly good for light-duty and occasional use: latches, small levers, camera tilt and short repeatable arcs. If a build has already stripped one of these, step up to the SG92R.

Wiring & code


  • Brown = GND, Red = V+, Orange = signal to a PWM pin (e.g. D9)
  • Use the built-in Arduino Servo library, no extra drivers needed
  • servo.write(angle) sets the position, with the usable band running about 90 to 180
  • Anything below 90 simply parks it against the low end stop
  • Sweep it slowly the first time to find where the ends sit on your unit
  • Under load, power from a dedicated 5V supply with a common ground

Frequently asked questions

What's the difference between the SG92R and the SG90?
Same 9g body, same 3-wire wiring, same horns and mounting holes, so they are drop-in interchangeable. The difference is internal: the SG92R uses carbon-fibre reinforced gears instead of plain nylon and makes roughly 2.2 to 2.5 kg/cm at 4.8V against the SG90's 1.6 to 1.8, which is about 25 to 40% more torque. It also has a tighter deadband, so it centres better and moves more smoothly. If a build keeps stripping SG90 gears, this is the direct upgrade.
Can I use the SG92R with Arduino?
Yes, it works with the built-in Servo library, no driver board or extra library needed. Brown = GND, Red = V+, Orange = signal to a PWM pin such as D9.
How far does it actually turn?
A 90 degree arc in total, not 180. Suppliers list it as 90-180 because the travel runs between the 90 and 180 marks on the standard servo scale: write(90) sits at one end and write(180) at the other. Anything below 90 just parks it against the low end stop. Sweep it slowly the first time to confirm where the ends sit on your unit, then keep your commanded angles inside that band.
Are the gears metal?
No. The SG92R uses carbon-fibre reinforced nylon, which is considerably tougher and more wear-resistant than the SG90's plain nylon but is not metal. If you specifically need metal gears, the MG90S is the part to look at.
Can I power it straight from the Arduino 5V pin?
Fine for light bench testing, but under load a micro servo can draw enough current to brown-out the board. For reliable use, power it from a dedicated 5V supply and share a common ground with the Arduino.
