XH 2.5mm PCB headers in 3-pin and 6-pin sizes, the board half of the common white XH wire-to-board connector. The pins go straight through the board and are soldered underneath, and the shrouded top takes an XH plug that latches on one side, so it only goes in one way. The 3-pin suits 2S LiPo balance leads and 3-wire sensors, and the 6-pin suits 5S balance leads and 6-wire harnesses.

What's in the box

4+
XH 2.5mm vertical PCB headers in the size you choose

Loose headers, as many as you order. Plug housings and crimp terminals are not included.

Great for

Adding a 2S or 5S balance lead socket to a charger or battery monitor board
Plug-in 3-wire sensors such as temperature or Hall sensors
Unpluggable fan, LED or 6-wire signal leads on your own PCB
Replacing a broken XH socket on an existing board

Wiring & getting started

  1. Pick the size

Count the wires on your plug: 3 wires need the 3-pin header, 6 wires need the 6-pin.

  2. Face the latch the right way

The wall with the two slots is the latch side. Turn the header so the plug's latch faces that wall with the wires in the order your board expects; it will not go in the other way round.

  3. Solder it

Push it down flat on the board, solder one end pin, check it sits square, then solder the rest. Keep the iron on each joint only long enough for the solder to flow.

  4. Make the cable

Crimp XH terminals onto 22 to 28 AWG wire and click them into a matching XH housing, such as our 3-way XH housing, then push it onto the header until it latches.

Note: XH (2.5mm) is a different size from PH (2.0mm). A PH plug will not fit these headers.

Frequently Asked Questions

Answers to the questions buyers ask most.

Which size do I need?
Count the wires on your plug. A 3-wire XH plug, such as a 2S LiPo balance lead, needs the 3-pin header. A 6-wire XH plug, such as a 5S balance lead, needs the 6-pin header.
Will it fit my LiPo balance lead?
Yes, if the lead ends in a white XH plug with the same number of wires. 2S packs use a 3-pin XH plug and 5S packs use a 6-pin XH plug. Check the wire order your board expects before soldering.
Is this 2.5mm or 2.54mm pitch?
2.5mm, the XH standard. The difference from a 0.1 inch (2.54mm) layout is 0.08mm over 3 pins and 0.2mm over 6 pins, so both sizes fit 2.54mm stripboard. For a new board, draw 2.5mm holes.
Is it compatible with JST-XH?
Yes. These are unbranded XH-style headers made to the same 2.5mm layout, and they mate with JST XH plugs and other XH leads of the same pin count. They are not made by JST.
Will a JST-PH plug fit?
No. PH is 2.0mm pitch and smaller all round, so it will not seat in an XH header.
Is it through-hole or surface mount?
Through-hole. The pins pass through 0.9 to 1.0mm holes and are soldered on the underside. The header stands upright with the opening facing up.
Which way does the plug go in?
The plug's latch goes on the side of the header with the two slots. It only fits that way round, so it cannot be plugged in backwards.
What do I need to make a cable for it?
An XH housing with the same number of ways and XH crimp terminals on 22 to 28 AWG wire. We stock the 3-way XH housing; housings and terminals are not included with the header.
How much current can it carry?
We suggest 2 A or less per pin. That covers balance leads, sensors, signal lines and small motors. Use a larger connector for main battery or motor power.
Is there a minimum order?
Yes, 4 headers of the size you choose. The price per header drops from 10 and again from 20, as shown above the Add to cart button.

Why Buy from NZN

Useful parts, fair prices and someone local to help.

I'm Lukas, an engineering student and maker based in Te Awamutu. NZN grew out of a CNC build that dragged on for months because every missing cable, bolt or electronic part meant another overseas order. I started the shop so Kiwi makers can spend more time building and less time waiting for the next parcel.
