A DC barrel connector with a 2-way screw terminal on the back, so you can put a plug or socket on a power lead without soldering. Choose the female socket to accept a plug pack's barrel plug, or the male plug to feed a device that has a DC socket. Both come in 5.5 x 2.1mm, the usual size on 12V plug packs, and 5.5 x 2.5mm. Each terminal is moulded with a + or - beside its screw.

What's in the box

1×
DC barrel screw terminal adapter

Female socket or male plug in the size you select. Order one of each type for a joint you can unplug.

Great for

Powering a 12V LED strip from a plug pack
Replacing a cut or damaged plug on a CCTV camera lead
Feeding an Arduino Uno's barrel jack from a bench supply
Making a plug-in joint in a low-voltage DC cable

Wiring & getting started

  1. Check the barrel size

Look for 5.5 x 2.1mm or 5.5 x 2.5mm on your power supply or device label. The two sizes look almost the same, but a 2.5mm plug sits loose on a 2.1mm socket pin and a 2.1mm plug will not fit a 2.5mm socket.

  2. Strip and fit the wires

Strip about 5mm from each wire, twist the strands, and push them into the square openings on the end of the green block. Tighten each screw firmly and tug the wire to check it holds. For a connector with the lead already fitted, see our 5.5x2.1mm DC power pigtail.

  3. Match the polarity

Put the positive wire under the screw marked + and the negative under the screw marked -. The + terminal goes to the centre pin, which suits centre-positive supplies, the usual type on 12V plug packs.

  4. Check before you power up

Measure the voltage and polarity at the far end with a multimeter before connecting your device, and keep the load to 2A or less.

Frequently Asked Questions

Answers to the questions buyers ask most.

Which barrel size do I need?
Match the size on your power supply or device label. 5.5 x 2.1mm is the usual size on 12V plug packs, CCTV cameras and the Arduino Uno's power jack. 5.5 x 2.5mm looks almost the same but has a thicker centre pin; a 2.5mm plug sits loose on a 2.1mm socket and a 2.1mm plug will not fit a 2.5mm socket.
Should I buy the female socket or the male plug?
Buy the female socket to plug a power supply's barrel plug into your wiring. Buy the male plug to feed power into a device that has a DC socket, such as a CCTV camera or an LED controller. Buy one of each, in the same size, to make a joint in a cable that you can unplug.
Which wire goes to which screw?
Each screw is marked + or - on the body. The + terminal connects to the centre pin, so on a centre-positive supply (the usual type) put the positive wire under +. If your supply label shows centre negative, swap them.
How much current can it carry?
We suggest up to 2A, which is 24W at 12V. That suits CCTV cameras, short LED strip runs and project boards.
Do I need to solder anything?
No. Strip about 5mm of each wire, push it into the square opening on the end of the green block and tighten the screw with a small cross-head screwdriver.

Why Buy from NZN

Useful parts, fair prices and someone local to help.

I'm Lukas, an engineering student and maker based in Te Awamutu. NZN grew out of a CNC build that dragged on for months because every missing cable, bolt or electronic part meant another overseas order. I started the shop so Kiwi makers can spend more time building and less time waiting for the next parcel.
