A DC power pigtail with a 5.5 x 2.1mm barrel connector on one end and about 24cm of red and black lead with tinned ends on the other. Choose the female socket to accept a power supply's plug, or the male plug to feed a device that has a DC socket. It suits 12V LED strips, CCTV cameras and project boxes powered from a plug pack.

Wiring & getting started

  1. Check the barrel size

Look for 5.5 x 2.1mm on your power supply label. A 5.5 x 2.5mm plug looks almost the same but sits loose in a 2.1mm socket.

  2. Match the polarity

The red wire goes to the centre pin. Most plug packs are centre positive, so red is positive. Check the polarity symbol on your supply's label; if it shows centre negative, treat red as negative.

  3. Join the leads

Solder and cover with heatshrink, use a screw terminal, or use a WAGO 221 lever connector for a tool-free joint.

  4. Check before you power up

Plug in the supply and measure the voltage and polarity at the far end before connecting your device. Keep the load to 2A or less.

Frequently Asked Questions

Answers to the questions buyers ask most.

Will this fit my power supply?
Yes, if the supply has a 5.5mm outside, 2.1mm centre pin barrel plug, which is the usual size on 12V plug packs. A 5.5 x 2.5mm plug looks almost identical but is a loose fit, so check the size printed on the supply label.
Which wire is positive?
The red wire is connected to the centre pin. Most 12V plug packs are centre positive, so red is positive. The polarity symbol on your supply label confirms it; on a centre-negative supply, red is negative.
Should I buy the female or the male version?
Buy the female socket to plug a power supply into your wiring. Buy the male plug to feed power into a device that has a DC socket, such as a CCTV camera or a board with a barrel jack. Buy one of each to make a joint you can unplug.
How much current can it carry?
Up to 2A, which is 24W at 12V. That suits CCTV cameras, short LED strip runs and project boards. Use a heavier cable and connector for bigger loads.

Why Buy from NZN

Useful parts, fair prices and someone local to help.

I'm Lukas, an engineering student and maker based in Te Awamutu. NZN grew out of a CNC build that dragged on for months because every missing cable, bolt or electronic part meant another overseas order. I started the shop so Kiwi makers can spend more time building and less time waiting for the next parcel.
