A butt connector joins two wires end to end in one crimp, with no twisting, no tape and no exposed copper. Push a stripped wire into each end, crimp both sides, and the tin-plated brass barrel clamps the strands while the PVC sleeve covers the whole join. This is the blue BV2 size, which takes 1.5 to 2.5 mm² wire (16 to 14 AWG), the most common gauge in 12V automotive, trailer, marine and general low-voltage work. How to crimp them
- Strip both wires
Remove about 6 to 8 mm of insulation from the end of each wire and twist the strands together.
- Insert one wire into each end
Feed the bare copper in until it reaches the middle of the barrel and the wire insulation sits against the sleeve.
- Crimp both ends
Squeeze each end with an insulated terminal crimping tool, using the blue jaw position.
- Tug to test
Pull firmly on both wires. A good crimp will not move. If a wire slides out, cut it back and redo it with a fresh connector.
Good to know: match the connector colour to your wire gauge for the best crimp, blue being 1.5 to 2.5 mm². These are insulated but not sealed, so for wet or exposed locations either slip adhesive lined heat shrink over the finished join or use our solder seal connectors instead.
