Making a plug-apart joint in a wire with a matching female spade
Adding a removable lead to a 12V fan, lamp or accessory
Replacing a damaged male spade on a wiring loom

Wiring & getting started

  1. Check the size with power off

Use wire with a conductor of 0.5 to 1.5 mm² and check that its insulation fits the red sleeve. The mating part must be a 6.3 mm female spade.

  2. Strip and crimp

Use a crimping tool and die made for insulated terminals and your wire size. Strip to the length of the wire barrel without cutting strands, push the conductor fully in, then crimp the red barrel.

  3. Inspect the joint

Check for loose strands, split insulation or a bent blade, and give the wire a firm tug. Then push the female spade fully onto the blade. It should take a firm push and not wobble.

  4. Cover the exposed metal

The blade is bare metal. Once mated, fit heat-shrink or an insulated cover if the joint could touch other conductors or be touched while powered.

Frequently Asked Questions

Answers to the questions buyers ask most.

What does this male spade plug into?
A 6.3 mm female spade, also sold as 6.35 mm, 1/4 inch or 250 series. Our FDD1.25-250 red female spade terminals are the matching part.
What wire size suits it?
Wire with a conductor of 0.5 to 1.5 mm². Check that the wire's insulation fits inside the red sleeve and that your crimp die is the right size.
What is the hole in the blade for?
It is a detent. Many female spades have a small raised dimple that clicks into the hole, which helps stop the joint shaking loose.
Is the blade insulated?
No. The red sleeve covers only the crimp barrel and the blade is bare metal. Once the joint is made, cover it with heat-shrink or an insulated boot if it could touch other conductors or be touched while powered.
Do I need a crimping tool?
Yes. Use a crimper with a die made for insulated terminals in this wire range. Pliers squash the sleeve and give a weak joint.
Does a quantity of one mean one terminal?
Yes, one unit is one terminal. The minimum order is 5, and larger quantities get a volume discount.

Why Buy from NZN

Useful parts, fair prices and someone local to help.

I'm Lukas, an engineering student and maker based in Te Awamutu. NZN grew out of a CNC build that dragged on for months because every missing cable, bolt or electronic part meant another overseas order. I started the shop so Kiwi makers can spend more time building and less time waiting for the next parcel.
