A Sunon KDE1204PKV3 40mm fan, 20mm deep, for 12V DC. It is the quiet, low-speed version of this Sunon MagLev fan, a common replacement size in routers, network switches, NAS boxes and small electronics enclosures. It has three wires: red and black for power, and yellow for the speed signal that fan headers use to show RPM.

What's in the box

1×
Sunon KDE1204PKV3 40 x 40 x 20mm fan

With its three-wire lead and white 3-pin plug fitted. Mounting screws are not included.

Great for

Replacing a noisy 40mm fan in a router or network switch
Quiet airflow through a NAS or small server enclosure
Cooling a 12V electronics box or power supply bay
Venting a Raspberry Pi or mini PC case with a 40mm cutout

Wiring & getting started

  1. Check the size and voltage

Measure the old fan: it should be 40 x 40mm, 20mm deep, with holes 32mm apart, and marked 12V. A 10mm-deep fan will not fit the same space.

  2. Match the wires

Red goes to +12V, black to ground and yellow to the fan header's sense or tach pin. If your device uses a different plug, move the wires across by colour. The yellow wire can be left unconnected.

  3. Point the airflow the right way

Arrows moulded on the side of the frame show the airflow and rotation direction. Fit it to blow the same way as the fan it replaces.

Note: This is the low-speed version, so it moves less air than the high-speed fans of the same size. If your device came with a KDE1204PKV1 or PKVX, check it can manage with 6.3 CFM before swapping. With no PWM wire, it runs at full speed on a 4-pin PWM header.

Frequently Asked Questions

Answers to the questions buyers ask most.

Will it fit my device?
It fits where the old fan is 40 x 40mm, 20mm deep, with mounting holes on a 32mm square, and runs from 12V DC. A 40 x 40 x 10mm fan is half the depth and will not fit the same space.
Will it plug into my fan header?
It has three wires (red +12V, black ground, yellow speed signal) ending in a white 3-pin plug. Check the plug matches your header; if not, move the wires across by colour to your device's connector.
Can I control the speed?
Not with PWM, because it has no fourth PWM wire. It runs at full speed from a 12V PWM header. The speed drops if the header lowers the voltage (DC fan control).
How loud is it and how much air does it move?
Sunon rates it at 18 dBA and 6.3 CFM at 12V. That is quiet, but lower airflow than the high-speed versions of the same size, so it suits light-duty cooling.
Does it work on 5V?
No. It is rated for 12V DC only. Power it from a 12V fan header or a 12V supply.
What does the yellow wire do?
It gives 2 pulses per revolution so a fan header or controller can read the speed. The fan runs without it connected.

Why Buy from NZN

Useful parts, fair prices and someone local to help.

I'm Lukas, an engineering student and maker based in Te Awamutu. NZN grew out of a CNC build that dragged on for months because every missing cable, bolt or electronic part meant another overseas order. I started the shop so Kiwi makers can spend more time building and less time waiting for the next parcel.
