An empty 3-way XH 2.5mm wire housing, the plug half of the JST-XH style connector used on RC LiPo balance leads, 3D printer boards and many sensor modules. It has no terminals fitted, so you add XH crimp terminals to your own wire and click them in. It plugs onto our XH 2.5mm 3-pin PCB header and any other 3-pin XH header.

XH 2.5mm 3-pin housing

Per unit ordered. Empty, with no terminals or wire.

Great for

Making or repairing a 2S LiPo balance lead plug
Wiring a 3-wire sensor to a board with an XH header
3D printer endstop and fan leads on XH-header boards
Custom 3-wire harnesses between your own boards

Wiring & getting started

  1. Get terminals and a crimper

You need three XH 2.5mm female crimp terminals (the JST type is SXH-001T-P0.6, for 28 to 22 AWG wire with 0.9 to 1.9mm insulation) and a crimper made for small open-barrel terminals, such as the SN-28B type. Dupont terminals are a different shape and will not lock in.

  2. Crimp each wire

Strip a short length so the bare wire sits in the front barrel and the insulation in the rear barrel, then crimp both. Tug each one to check it holds.

  3. Click the terminals in from the back

Push each terminal into its cavity from the flanged end until it clicks. It only goes in one way up, so if it stops short, turn it over rather than forcing it. Pull gently on the wire to confirm it has locked.

  4. Plug it onto the header

Line up the two ribs on the housing with the two slots in the header's wall and push straight on. It only fits one way round, so the wire order you crimp is the order you get on the pins.

Note: On a balance lead, match the wire order to the battery before you crimp. The plug only goes on one way, so a lead crimped in the wrong order cannot be fixed by flipping it and can short a cell.

Frequently Asked Questions

Answers to the questions buyers ask most.

Are the crimp terminals included?
No. This is the empty plastic housing only. Add three XH 2.5mm female crimp terminals (the JST type is SXH-001T-P0.6), crimped onto your wire, then click them into the housing from the back.
What wire and crimper do I need?
Standard XH crimp terminals take 28 to 22 AWG wire with insulation 0.9 to 1.9mm across. Use a crimper made for small open-barrel terminals, such as the common SN-28B type. Pliers can work in a pinch, but the crimp is less reliable and can stop the terminal locking in.
Will it fit a JST XH header or a LiPo balance lead?
Yes. It is the 2.5mm XH size and made to XH standard dimensions, so it plugs onto any 3-pin XH header, including our XH 3-pin PCB header. A 3-pin XH plug is the balance plug size used on 2S LiPo packs.
How much current can it carry?
We suggest up to 2A per pin, using 22 to 24 AWG wire. Genuine XH parts are rated 3A with 22 AWG wire; we keep a margin below that for these unbranded housings and terminals.
Is this the same as JST PH?
No. PH is the smaller 2.0mm pitch connector and the two do not mate. Measure the pin spacing on your board: about 2.5mm is XH, 2.0mm is PH.
Can I use Dupont terminals in it?
No. Dupont terminals are a different shape and do not lock into XH cavities. Use XH crimp terminals.
Is there a minimum order?
Yes, 5 housings at $0.35 each ($1.75). From 10 housings they are $0.31 each.
How do I get a terminal back out?
Press the terminal's small locking tongue down through its window in the housing with a pin or fine screwdriver, then pull the wire out gently from the back.

Why Buy from NZN

Useful parts, fair prices and someone local to help.

I'm Lukas, an engineering student and maker based in Te Awamutu. NZN grew out of a CNC build that dragged on for months because every missing cable, bolt or electronic part meant another overseas order. I started the shop so Kiwi makers can spend more time building and less time waiting for the next parcel.
