An M3 aluminium rivnut, also known as a threaded insert, rivet nut or nutsert. It gives you a strong M3 machine-thread in thin sheet, tube or panel where you cannot reach the back to hold a normal nut. You set it from one side with a rivnut tool, and the knurled body grips the hole so it will not spin. The flat head sits neatly against the surface. Aluminium keeps it light and rust free, and it is easy to set with hand tools.

Great for
How to set a rivnut
- Drill the hole
Make a clean 5.0mm hole in your panel and clear any burrs.
- Load the tool
Wind the rivnut onto the mandrel of your rivnut or nutsert tool until the head sits flat.
- Insert into the hole
Push the rivnut into the hole so the flat head rests against the surface.
- Squeeze to set
Work the tool to compress the body. It bulges out behind the panel and locks in place, leaving you a clean M3 thread.
Common questions
What size hole do I drill?
A 5.0mm hole suits the 4.5mm knurled body with a little clearance. Keep it snug so the knurls bite and stop the rivnut turning.
Do I need a special tool?
Yes, a rivnut or nutsert setting tool does the job cleanly. In a pinch you can set one with a bolt, a nut and a couple of washers, but a proper tool is faster and more reliable for a batch.
Aluminium or steel, which should I pick?
Aluminium is lighter, will not rust and sets easily with hand tools, so it is ideal for thin sheet, plastic and general work. Choose a steel rivnut when you need maximum thread strength or high clamping loads.
How thick a panel can it clamp?
This M3 size grips material from about 0.5mm up to around 3.0mm thick. For thicker work you would step up to a longer body or larger thread.
Will it spin in the hole?
The knurled body is made to dig into the edge of the hole as it sets, which stops it spinning when you tighten a bolt into it.
