Add a half-duplex RS485 interface to a 5V UART without using a separate direction-control pin. This TTL485 V2.0 board uses a MAX13487 transceiver to switch automatically between transmit and receive, with screw terminals, status LEDs and optional onboard termination.

What's in the box

MAX13487 TTL to RS485 AutoDirection module

Red TTL485 V2.0 PCB with fitted pin header and three-position screw terminal.

Great for

Microcontroller-to-RS485 links
Industrial sensors and controllers
Multi-drop serial networks
Automation and HVAC projects

Wiring & getting started

  1. Connect power with the circuit off

Connect a regulated 5V rail to VCC and join the controller and module grounds.

  2. Connect the UART

Connect controller TX to TXD and controller RX to RXD. The module handles transmit and receive direction automatically.

  3. Connect the RS485 bus

Connect D+/A to the remote A or + terminal and D-/B to the remote B or - terminal. Keep polarity consistent across the bus.

  4. Set termination only at a cable end

Bridge 120_S only when this module is at a physical end of the RS485 cable. Leave it open at intermediate nodes.

Frequently Asked Questions

Answers to the questions buyers ask most.

Is this a MAX3485 module?
No. The photographed board is fitted with a MAX13487 transceiver. It runs from 5V and handles RS485 direction automatically.
Can I connect it to a 3.3V microcontroller?
The TXD input accepts a 3.3V logic-high signal, but the module still requires a 5V supply. RXD is a 5V logic output, so use level shifting if the controller input is not 5V tolerant.
Do I need a direction-control pin?
No. The MAX13487 automatically changes between transmit and receive, so the controller only needs TXD, RXD and ground connections.
When should I enable the 120 ohm termination?
Bridge 120_S only when this module is at a physical end of the RS485 cable. Leave it open at intermediate bus nodes.
Is this module galvanically isolated?
No. The controller side and RS485 side share a common electrical reference. Use a separate isolated RS485 interface where galvanic isolation is required.
What baud rate can it use?
The fitted MAX13487 is slew-rate limited for operation up to 500 kbps. Practical reliability also depends on cable length, topology, grounding and termination.

Why Buy from NZN

Useful parts, fair prices and someone local to help.

I'm Lukas, an engineering student and maker based in Te Awamutu. NZN grew out of a CNC build that dragged on for months because every missing cable, bolt or electronic part meant another overseas order. I started the shop so Kiwi makers can spend more time building and less time waiting for the next parcel.
