The SG90 is a compact 9 g servo for Arduino, RC and robotics projects. Choose 90° for a short positional arc, 180° for standard angle control, or 360° for continuous rotation. All three options use the same 3-wire connection, body and mounting pattern, and each comes with horns and screws.

90° - Short positional arc

Moves through a 90° arc and holds position. Its useful Arduino range is typically write(90) to write(180).

180° - Standard positional

Moves to a commanded angle and holds it across a full 180° sweep. This is the version most tutorials and projects expect.

360° - Continuous rotation

Turns continuously in either direction. The signal controls speed and direction, not shaft angle, with neutral around 1500 µs.

Wiring & getting started

  1. Connect the three wires

    Brown goes to GND, red to a regulated 4.8 to 6 V supply, and orange to the controller's signal pin.

  2. Share the ground

    If the servo has a separate power supply, connect its ground to the Arduino, ESP32 or receiver ground.

  3. Use the right control range

    For 90°, start with write(90) to write(180). For 180°, use write(0) to write(180). End points vary slightly between units, so test the travel before fitting the horn to a loaded mechanism.

  4. Set neutral on the 360° option

    write(90) or about 1500 µs should stop it. If it creeps, adjust the neutral value slightly until the shaft stays still.

  5. Allow enough current

    One unloaded servo can be tested from a development board's 5 V pin. For a loaded servo or several servos, use a separate regulated supply with a common ground.

Can I use the SG90 with Arduino?
Yes. Use the built-in Servo library, with brown to GND, red to 4.8 to 6 V, and orange to a signal pin. No separate driver board is needed.
What is the difference between the 90°, 180° and 360° options?
The 90° and 180° options move to a commanded position and hold it. The 90° option covers a shorter arc. The 360° option turns continuously, so the command sets speed and direction instead of an angle.
Which rotation option should I choose?
Choose 180° for most tutorials, robot arms, steering and other projects that need position control. Choose 90° for a short linkage or latch. Choose 360° for wheels, conveyors or displays that need to keep turning.
How do I control the 90° option?
With the Arduino Servo library, its useful range is typically write(90) to write(180). Test the end points on your unit before fitting the horn to a loaded mechanism, and avoid driving it against the mechanical stops.
Why will the 360° option not hold an angle?
It is a continuous-rotation servo, so it does not provide position control. Around write(90), or 1500 µs, is neutral. Values either side set direction and speed. Adjust neutral slightly if the shaft creeps.
Can I power it from an Arduino 5 V pin?
One unloaded servo is usually fine for a quick test. For a loaded servo or several servos, use a separate regulated 4.8 to 6 V supply and connect its ground to the controller ground.
